Advanced Health Assessment
This course introduces the student to the essential competencies necessary to provide primary health care to patients and families of diverse populations. Students engage in study that will assist them in understanding the developmental and cultural needs of patients across the lifespan as they relate to delivery of advanced health assessment within a primary health care nursing framework. Family frameworks that reflect a developmental, systems approach are presented to guide the student in understanding the primary health care needs of patients, families and systems in this context.

A holistic and comprehensive approach to the patient is emphasized with particular attention to identifying the health promotion, disease prevention needs as well as the management of common signs and symptoms that present in the primary care setting. Common health issues encountered in primary care are presented in a systems framework using clinical scenarios where students implement the process of clinical decision making and use critical thinking skills. Patient safety and safe use of medicinal therapies are introduced and instituted.

Advanced health assessment techniques are demonstrated throughout the course, for both adult and pediatric populations. Theories and conceptual models from family nursing and related disciplines are integrated through a developmental approach. In addition, concepts and research questions that require further scholarly nursing investigation for the purposes of primary care delivery across the lifespan are identified.
